Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, has issued a public apology, particularly to its alumni, in response to an alleged assault on a male student by a lecturer identified as Dr Ariyo. The incident involved a 200-level student named Gift, who mistakenly entered a lecture room where Dr Ariyo was conducting a class. The situation escalated when Gift attempted to leave the class, and the lecturer insisted on seizing his phone. A video circulating online captured the altercation, including the lecturer throwing a punch at the student.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the incident, OAU’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Adebayo Bamire, has taken action by initiating the formation of a committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the altercation. In an official statement, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, emphasized that the behavior witnessed in the viral video contradicts the university’s values. He assured the public, especially alumni, that justice will be served appropriately. Despite the incident, Olarewaju called for calm among the students, encouraging them to continue with their normal academic activities.
The university’s response reflects a commitment to maintaining decency and diligence, and the initiation of an investigative committee underscores the seriousness with which OAU is addressing the alleged assault.
